Organic fertiliser and crop nutrition for arable farming

Organic fertiliser and crop nutrition for arable farming

UK arable farming is under increasing pressure. Soil health is declining, our climate is becoming more volatile, environmental regulations are tightening and input costs are rising. At SoilWorx, we work alongside arable farmers to deliver a solution: consistent, high-quality, slow-release organic fertilisers that build enduring soil health, maintain yields, reduce nutrient run-off and deliver a measurable return on investment.

Our fully automated production line is capable of producing over 500 tonnes of organic pellets every week, to exactly the same specification. Our process of composting, heating and sterilising delivers consistent moisture levels whilst eliminating pathogens too. So they are safe to use on Class 1 veg and all crop types. With 75%+ organic matter content and four times the nutrient density of standard manure, SoilWorx crop nutrition solutions offer a genuine path to more sustainable arable production without compromising performance.

Why choose organic crop nutrition for arable crops?

Decades of reliance on synthetic fertilisers, soil compaction and now climate change have taken a toll on arable soils across the UK and Ireland. Organic matter levels on many arable farms have fallen below 3%, leading to poor soil structure, reduced water-holding capacity and increased erosion risk.

Organic fertiliser addresses these challenges at the root:

  • Rebuilds soil organic matter: Every tonne of SoilWorx crop nutrition product adds measurable organic matter, improving soil structure season on season.
  • Feeds the soil biology: Organic inputs stimulate microbial activity, unlocking nutrients already present in the soil and improving natural disease suppression.
  • Slow-release crop nutrition: Nutrients are released in line with crop demand, reducing leaching losses and improving nitrogen use efficiency.
  • Reduces chemical dependency: By improving natural soil fertility, organic fertiliser can reduce or replace a proportion of synthetic inputs as part of a hybrid approach over time.
  • Supports environmental schemes: Organic fertiliser use aligns with SFI (Sustainable Farming Incentive), ELMS and cross-compliance requirements.

Recommended SoilWorx products for arable

Dynamo 4-2-3
A base dressing for all crops

Dynamo is the foundation of any arable or grassland nutrition programme. With a balanced 4-2-3 NPK analysis plus 75%+ organic matter, it delivers essential macro-nutrients alongside the organic matter your soil needs. Organic Trust and OMRI certified. For crops, apply pre-drilling as a base dressing to establish a strong nutrition programme for the growing season.

N-Boost 8-2-2
Higher nitrogen content for cereals and oilseed rape

Provides an 8% nitrogen push when it’s needed, in a slow-release organic form (e.g. for cereals entering stem extension and oilseed rape). Unlike urea or ammonium nitrate, N-Boost releases nitrogen gradually, reducing the risk of scorch and leaching while providing sustained nutrition through the critical growth stages.

Feather Meal 13-0-0
Slow-release nitrogen for crop nutrition

For situations demanding higher nitrogen without additional phosphorus or potassium, Feather Meal offers 13% N in a form that breaks down steadily over 8–12 weeks. Organic Trust certified. Ideal for reducing nitrogen application rates or correcting mid-season deficiency.

K-Boost 3-2-17
Purpose-built for potassium-hungry crops

SoilWorx K-Boost delivers a concentrated dose of potassium alongside essential base nutrition and 60%+ organic matter. Applied pre-planting, K-Boost ensures potassium availability at critical growth stages for all fruit and veg, especially potatoes.

Notes
Winter Wheat
High N,
moderate P & K
Dynamo (base) + N-Boost or Feather Meal (top-up)
Split nitrogen applications for milling wheat quality.
Winter Barley
Moderate N,
moderate P & K
Dynamo (base) + N-Boost (single spring app)
Lower total N than wheat. Early application timing critical.
Oilseed Rape
High N, high S, moderate K
Dynamo (autumn base) + N-Boost (spring)
Autumn establishment critical. Consider sulphur supplementation.
Spring Oats
Moderate N, moderate P & K
Dynamo (base) + N-Boost if needed
Avoid excessive N to prevent lodging.
Field Beans / Peas
Moderate P & K
Dynamo (base only)
Legumes fix their own nitrogen. Use only as a soil improver before planting.

Meeting sustainability requirements

The agricultural policy landscape is shifting decisively towards environmental outcomes. Under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) in England, and equivalent schemes across the devolved nations, farmers are incentivised to improve soil health, reduce nutrient pollution and increase organic matter levels.

Including SoilWorx organic fertilisers in your crop nutrition programme supports compliance with:

  • SFI Soil Health actions: Organic matter additions directly support improved soil structure
  • Nutrient management requirements: NVZ rules limit the application of all fertilisers in areas with poor river pollution. Although SoilWorx organic fertilisers improve soil structure and reduce the risk of nutrients leaching into watercourses, farmers must follow NVZ spreading rules and closed periods.
  • Organic certification: SoilWorx crop nutrition products are OMRI Listed and Organic Trust certified, suitable for fully organic systems.
  • Carbon and sustainability reporting: Lower carbon footprint than synthetic alternatives supports farm-level sustainability metrics.

Frequently asked questions

Like any organic fertiliser, replacing a portion of your synthetic fertiliser programme with SoilWorx may lead to a short transition period, with modest yield adjustment as soil biology rebuilds. However, many arable farmers using SoilWorx report comparable yields within two to three seasons, with the added benefit of improved soil resilience and lower input costs over time.

SoilWorx products are suitable for most spreaders and no specialist equipment should be required. Test and calibrate your spreader prior to application. The consistent pellet size (4–5mm) ensures an even distribution at normal spreading widths of up to 36 metres.

Our products are heat-treated at over 115°C, which sterilises the material and greatly reduces odour. Most customers report minimal smell: far less than raw manure or slurry.

Yes. Many arable farmers include SoilWorx organic fertiliser in their crop nutrition programmes and supplement with synthetic nitrogen if needed. This hybrid approach reduces overall synthetic use while building soil health.

Our heat-treatment and milling process eliminates weed seeds, pathogens and harmful bacteria. SoilWorx products are safe to use on any crop without risk of introducing contaminants.
